2.25 Million Tons of Food Aid Sent by U.N.

February 27, 1987|United Press International

ROME — The U.N. World Food Program shipped a record 2.25 million tons of food aid in 1986, Director James Ingram reported this week.

Purchases of surplus food from developing countries for shipment to developing countries in need of food helped to hold down costs while boosting the economies of the producer countries, he said.

The agency provides a quarter of the world's food aid, with about 70% used in Food for Work and other development projects and the rest for emergencies like drought relief for sub-Saharan Africa and assistance to Afghan, Cambodian, Somalian and other refugees.
