Three wrestlers from Victor Valley High School--Charlie Irick, Ray Leonard and Dan Henderson--won championships Saturday in the Southern Section Masters meet at Fountain Valley High School.
Irick defeated Alhambra Keppel's Lupe Jimenez, 7-4, for the 115-pound division title; Leonard pinned Coachella Valley's Armando Moralez at 1:22 for the 122-pound title, and Henderson defeated Atascadero's James Seay, 9-1, for the 148-pound title.
Victor Valley qualified four wrestlers for next weekend's CIF State Meet at Fresno's Selland Arena, as did 4-A champion Anaheim Canyon. The Comanches, however, failed to win a Masters championship.
Calexico, Goleta Dos Pueblos, Keppel, Rosemead and Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley each qualified three wrestlers for the state meet. Placentia Valencia took two championships, as Sam Lopez defeated Montebello Schurr's Sheldon Kim, 8-6, for the 108-pound title, and Fred Jenkins beat Dos Pueblos' Carson Wollert, 15-8, for the 178-pound title.
Other Masters champions were Albert Tabarez (Calexico, 101), Antone McKee (Long Beach Poly, 129), Victor Saucedo (Santa Maria Righetti, 135), Tom Odar (Fountain Valley, 141), Brian Malavar (Anaheim Loara, 157), Todd Tomazic (Placentia El Dorado, 178), Andy Silvestro (Simi Valley, 194) and Tom Osendorf (Anaheim Savanna, heavyweight).
