Slaney Sets Record for 10K Course

March 01, 1987

Mary Decker Slaney set a course record in winning the women's division of the American Continental 10K at Phoenix.

Slaney, co-holder of the U.S. 10K record of 31 minutes 38 seconds, was timed in 32:03, just under the course record of 32:04, set by England's Wendy Sly in 1985.

"I went out fast, I finished well, but the middle was slow," said the 28-year-old Slaney, who missed the indoor season because of foot surgery. "It was a case of not having raced for a while. It was still a test of fitness and fun and a way to break up the winter training schedule."

The men's division was won by Arturo Barrios of Mexico. Barrios, who set a loop course world record of 27:41 last year, was timed in 27:50.
