Police Raid Solidarity Meeting

March 02, 1987|United Press International

WARSAW — Police today raided a news conference held by the outlawed Solidarity union and detained a prominent activist in the first move against the group since a government amnesty last year freed 225 of its leaders.

Ten minutes after the news conference began, three uniformed police raided the apartment of prominent dissident Jacek Kuron and led away Zbigniew Romaszewski, a Solidarity leader who monitors human rights violations. Romaszewski was freed an hour later, and Kuron was warned that he will face a misdemeanor court for allowing a news conference to be held at his apartment.
