Bill Farr, Reporter for Times, Dies at 52

March 05, 1987

Bill Farr, a newspaper reporter who once served 46 days in jail rather than disclose a confidential news source, died early today at UCLA Medical Center. He was 52 and had been battling pancreatic cancer for 20 months.

Farr was a reporter for the Los Angeles Times at the time of his death but his legal ordeal began in 1970 when, as a reporter for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, he published an account of purported plans by the Charles Manson family--already on trial--for the Tate-La Bianca slayings--to kill additional celebrities.

Farr refused to tell the court where he had obtained the information and was later sentenced to jail for contempt of court.
