College Roundup : Trevino and Kaub Help Fullerton to Fast Start in 13-4 Win Over USIU

Tony Trevino and Keith Kaub hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning Wednesday and Cal State Fullerton went on to defeat United States International University, 13-4, in a nonconference game played on the Gulls' field at San Diego.

USIU starter Roddy Wilburn walked 10 batters and allowed 9 runs in 3 innings. Bobby Jones also homered in the ninth inning for Fullerton (10-8) and the game was then called by the umpire, who thought that USIU reliever Sean Rydell had intentionally thrown a pitch at Titan hitter Jim Osborn.

In other nonconference action:

Southern California College 3, La Verne 2--Jeff Motske reached on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the ninth inning and later scored on a two-out throwing error to lift the Vanguards (5-9) to the win at home.

Joe Holden had an RBI single for SCC's first run in the fourth, and Matt Kanopsios, who had two hits, knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Starter Josh Johnston allowed one run on seven hits through eight innings, but Mike Lomeli, who relieved in the ninth, picked up the victory.

Chapman 11, La Verne 6--The Panthers trailed, 6-1, after four innings but scored five runs in the sixth, one in the eighth and four in the ninth to defeat the Leopards in a nonconference game played at La Verne.

Jeff Morrison went 4 for 5 with two doubles, Darren Neslon had a double and a home run, and Bryon Beals had 3 hits and 3 stolen bases to lead Chapman (7-7).

In women's tennis action:

UC Irvine 5, Western Michigan 4--The Anteaters' No. 1 doubles team of Stephanie Rhorer and Dina Trenwith defeated Marla Whitfield and Jan Weigand, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, in the final match to break a 4-4 tie to give Irvine (7-10) the victory at the Racquet Club of Irvine.

UCI's No. 2 singles player, Uma Rao, defeated Whitfield, 6-4, 6-2, to win her seventh straight match to improve to 11-10.
