WHITTIER — As a centennial project, the Whittier Area Genealogical Society is offering numbered founders certificates to those who lived, or whose family lived, in the Whittier area between 1887 and 1930.
Certificates with gold seals will be issued to those whose relatives lived in the area before the city's incorporation in 1898. A list of certificates and supporting documents will be kept in the Research Room of the Whittier Museum and will be available to genealogical researchers.
Among the documents considered as evidence of residence or relationship are birth, death and marriage certificates, census reports, land records, wills or probate records, newspaper articles and family records. The genealogical society asks that applicants send only photocopies.
Applications are available at the centennial office in the Community Center and other locations. There is a $6 fee with the application.
