March 10, 1987

The biggest newspaper in Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname, will close by the end of the month because it cannot buy newsprint. Leo Morpugo, editor of De Ware Tijd, said the Central Bank has not issued the U.S. dollars needed to buy imported newsprint, even though the paper has sufficient funds in local currency. The former Dutch colony, on the northeastern coast of South America, is trying to conserve hard currency because of an economic crisis brought on, in part, by a rebel insurgency. The government has criticized the paper for publishing stories not approved by the military.
