The State

March 15, 1987

Toilets are on sale in Carmel because officials fear a water shortage. So they are selling ultra low-flush potties for $127.53 to Carmel residents who will have to provide for the installation. About half the 200 toilets ordered already have been sold. Authorities in the town, where actor Clint Eastwood now is mayor, became alarmed after residents used up more 99.97% of Carmel's water supply from the Monterey Peninsula Water District in July and ordered purchase of the toilets, which use about two gallons of water less per flush.
