Milton, Vt., residents circulated petitions for reinstatement of the town's police officers, who resigned last week to protest what they called "unprofessional behavior" on the part of their chief. Organizers of the drive said that the petitions would be presented at a town hall meeting Monday night. The seven patrolmen and three dispatchers submitted with their resignations 36 complaints against Chief W. James Lyons, 44, including a warrantless search of a home.
