Let's Reward the Defense for Foiling the Offense

March 21, 1987

Of the innumerable idiotic rules in college basketball, by far the most imbecilic is the "alternate possession" rule. It makes no sense for the defense to force what used to be called a jump-ball situation, and then have the offense retain possession under the alternate possession rule.

Whenever there is a jump ball, possession should always go to the defense because it should be rewarded for doing something right and the offense should be penalized for doing something wrong.
