BRIEFLY

The 50-millionth Volkswagen rolled off the line.

March 24, 1987

The festivities were dampened by the disclosure earlier this month of a huge currency swindle at Europe's biggest car maker. VW Chairman Carl Hahn drove the milestone car, a white VW Golf, off the assembly line after a short speech to workers at the company's sprawling plant in Wolfsburg, West Germany. VW called off planned celebrations after disclosing earlier this month that it may have lost up to $260 million due to alleged fraud in currency transactions aimed at protecting the firm from swings in the value of the dollar.
