AIDS to Strike All Nations, U.N. Warns

March 24, 1987|From Reuters

LONDON — The United Nations' World Health Organization warned Monday that AIDS is spreading like an epidemic and will strike virtually every country in the world within the next few years.

Jonathan Mann, head of the group's acquired immune deficiency syndrome control program, told reporters that more than 44,600 cases of the disease have already been reported in 99 countries.

But he said the actual number of cases could be as high as 100,000 and that up to 10 million people could be carriers of the virus.

"We are still at the historic moment; that is, at the beginning of a worldwide epidemic whose dimensions we are unable at this time to predict," he said after a one-day international gathering to discuss the spread of the disease.
