SANTIAGO, Chile — Police arrested 40 people Friday, most of them women, demonstrating in support of several hundred prisoners accused of terrorism who are staging a hunger strike to demand that they be recognized as political prisoners.

The demonstrators, who chained themselves to railings in front of the Justice Ministry in central Santiago, urged Pope John Paul II, who starts a five-day visit to Chile next week, to intervene on the prisoners' behalf.
