A 17-year-old high school student was killed Thursday when her car was hit by a van and then tumbled down an embankment in Rancho Santa Fe, authorities reported.
Amy Marie Watkins, a student at La Jolla Country Day School and a resident of Rancho Santa Fe, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 2:40 p.m. accident, which occurred on Via de la Valle, about a half mile west of Calzada del Bosque.
She was headed east on Via de la Valle in her late-model car when a van going the opposite direction crossed over into her lane on a sharp curve. The van, driven by David Smith, 20, of San Diego, hit Watkins' car and sent it over the embankment.
Smith was taken by Life Flight to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, where he was listed in critical but stable condition.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
