POP EYE

April 05, 1987|PATRICK GOLDSTEIN

MOVING RIGHT ALONG: Weird Al Yankovic, pop music's merry prankster, will make his acting debut on a Tobe Hooper-directed episode of "Amazing Stories" that airs Friday at 8:30 p.m. on NBC. He plays the next best thing to a Cabbage Patch doll--a cabbage man from outer space, who suddenly appears at a schlocky "Miss Stardust" beauty pageant, threatening the impresario (played by Dick Shawn) with the destruction of the planet unless he includes worthy candidates from Venus, Mars and other intergalactic hot-spots. "It's my first real acting role, where I didn't have to play myself," said Yankovic. "I'm just excited about being involved with a Steven Speilberg show. I'd even mow the guy's lawn if he asked."

Yankovic said it took three hours for him to be made-up for the part. "My head really looks like a cabbage. In fact, I'm green all over. My forehead is a giant lettuce, my mustache is covered with green leaves and I'm wearing a green lame business suit." Yankovic laughed. "Of course, you can still tell it's me, at least if you can tell the difference between me and certain vegetables."
