Dayton, Ohio-based Mead Corp. reported first-quarter profit increased 64% and sales rose 40%. Results include revenue from newly acquired Zellerbach Paper Group and Ampad Corp. "The combination of capital improvement programs and more employee involvement has been paying off throughout our paper operations," a spokesman said. Particularly strong demand continues for the firm's unbleached coated paperboard, which had a sales increase of 13% over the first quarter of 1986, he added.
