Unfortunately, Too Many Others Share Mr. Campanis' View

April 09, 1987

Rather than the obvious outrage Al Campanis' remarks regarding "them" will provoke, I would suggest that Trader Al's performance was merely pathetic. The man is obviously a product of his generation, of his social background.

He still parrots the imbecilities of his youth, when times and his own fortunate social circumstances should have mitigated this piece of bald ignorance. If a presidential cabinet appointee can lose his job for this sort of thing, certainly Al can be eased into premature retirement, which, on strictly baseball terms, is otherwise completely justified.
