West Covina : Building Ban Extended

April 16, 1987

The City Council has extended a year-old moratorium on building homes within 2,000 feet of hazadous waste deposits at the BKK Corp. landfill.

The moratorium, which was due to expire Tuesday, was extended until next April to allow the state Department of Health Services to complete studies of health risks in the area.

However, state officials have told the city that the studies may not be completed by this time next year. "What happens in the meantime, I'm not sure," said Steven W. Wylie, assistant to the city manager. "We will use whatever information we can (get) from them."

The council modified the moratorium to allow developers to begin planning projects in the area, but Wylie said the city cannot approve such projects until after the moratorium is ended.
