The World : S. Africa Bars Labor Rallies

South African magistrates have banned 20 May Day rallies planned by black unions in major cities, Jay Naidoo, secretary general of the 600,000-member Congress of South African Trade Unions, told a news conference. About 25,000 black transport and post office workers are now on strike in South Africa. Meanwhile, police fired tear gas at students demonstrating on two university campuses in Cape Town and Johannesburg, and officers detained two ABC News employees and confiscated film from a Reuters photographer.
