SALAMANCA, Spain — A retired 86-year-old teacher from a village near this central Spanish city sent King Juan Carlos I $200 to have a cup of coffee, the state news agency EFE said Friday.

It said Francisca Macias sent the gift with a message inviting the king to "have a cup of coffee to my health" in view of the admirable job she said he had done as monarch. EFE said the Zarzuela Palace had donated the money to charity.
