Woman Becomes Dallas Mayor

May 04, 1987|United Press International

DALLAS — Annette Strauss was inaugurated today as the first elected woman mayor of Dallas, the nation's seventh-largest city, and called for an end to hostilities between minorities and police.

Strauss, 63, sister-in-law of former National Democratic Chairman Robert Strauss, also labeled crime "an immediate and pressing concern" and called for the hiring of 150 more police officers. Strauss won 57% of the vote in an April runoff that ended the costliest mayoral race in Dallas history.
