House OKs Defense Budget Cut

May 05, 1987|Associated Press

WASHINGTON — The House today approved a defense budget which would cut President Reagan's Pentagon build-up, while the Senate Armed Services Committee voted to freeze defense spending.

The Democratic-controlled House voted 248 to 172 to authorize $288 billion in Pentagon spending for the fiscal year starting Oct. 1, compared to the current authorized defense budget of $289 billion. Reagan had sought $312 billion for defense for the next fiscal year, which would have represented a 3% hike beyond the expected inflation rate.
