The Long Beach Board of Education has voted to establish a one-room schoolhouse at the Isthmus on Santa Catalina Island. Opening its doors in the fall, the school will serve at least 14 elementary school children living at Twin Harbors who currently travel by bus to the island's only school in Avalon.
Parents long have lobbied the district for a way to eliminate their children's long bus rides. The new school--which is being paid for largely through donations--will be the only one of its kind in Los Angeles County and one of about three dozen one-room schoolhouses in the state. Planners say they intend to paint the new school red.
