Guatemalan President Vinicio Cerezo Arevalo confirmed that 18 U.S. soldiers had transported Guatemalan soldiers in helicopters, but he denied a Pentagon report that the troops were taken to fight leftist rebels. A Pentagon spokesman, Col. Marvin Braman, said Tuesday that about 300 soldiers were transported aboard three Army CH-47 Chinook helicopters 200 miles from Guatemala City to the town of Playa Grande. Cerezo dismissed the Pentagon report about combat with guerrillas as "an opinion of theirs." The Pentagon said it stood by its earlier statement.
