West Germany defeated the United States, 8-7, in the first round of the World Cup men's water polo tournament at Salonica, Greece.

In other games, defending world champion Yugoslavia was held to a 9-9 tie by the Soviet Union; Italy beat Spain, 12-6, and Cuba trounced Greece, 12-5.

The leading scorer for the United States was Kevin Robertson with three goals. Peter Campbell added two, and Jeff and Jody Campbell had one each.
