Chapman players Miles Walker, Paul Wekesa and Olivier Amerlinck advanced Thursday to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II individual men's tennis championships at Northridge.
Walker, the No. 3 seed, advanced by defeating Karl Huber, 6-4, 6-1, and Karl Johnson, 6-4, 6-2. Sixth-seeded Wekesa defeated Dionne Joannu, 7-6, 7-5, and then toppled Eduardo Afini, 6-2, 6-1. Amerlinck, who was unseeded, defeated Michael White, 6-3, 6-2, and Dave Kruger, 6-4, 7-5.
All three players resume play in the four-day tournament today at 9 a.m.
The other Chapman players didn't fare as well. Paul Charlesworth upset seventh-seeded Rozzel Lightfoot, 6-4, 6-2, before losing to Benji Aquirre, 6-4, 6-2. Dave Seline lost to Johnson, 6-1, 6-3, and Allen Juinio lost to Tom Bogar, 4-6, 1-0, before retiring with an injured shoulder.
In doubles play, sixth-seeded Amerlinck-Walker lost to Robert Green-Barry Pelts, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4. Charlesworth-Seline beat Pat Emmet-Pat Johnson, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, and Wekesa-Barry Hancock defeated Kruger-Nelson Emery, 6-2, 6-3.
