If there is a silver lining to be found in the tragic Stark incident, it is the direct reflection it casts on the idiocy of Reagan's "Star Wars" defense plan. The Stark is an operational weapons system in an acknowledged war zone with all the latest anti-missile technology at the ready. Did technology save it from just one 10-year old "skimmer"? No!
With this failure in mind (against one subsonic target), how enthusiastic should the country be when asked to spend billions on Star Wars to guard against hundreds of incoming supersonic ICBMs?
Future world safety is not to be found in technology. Face to face negotiations are the only answer.
