Douglas E. Hanes has been appointed president and publisher of Golden West Publishing Inc. in Mission Viejo. He replaces Allan G. Pilger, who resigned to pursue outside interests, the company said.

Hanes comes to Golden West from the Hearst Corp. in Los Angeles, where for the past year he developed account sales and handled a new marketing program for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner.

For the five years prior to that he was president and publisher of Titsch Publishing Co., a Denver-based publisher of daily and weekly newspapers and of special interest magazines.

Hanes also was vice president of sales and marketing of the Pennysaver Group for Harte-Hanks Communications in Santa Ana.

Golden West Publishing Inc. is a division of Media General Inc. of Richmond, Va., and publishes 13 community newspapers, including the Saddleback Valley News and the Laguna Niguel News.
