Weinberger Scored on Testing

May 26, 1987

It is unfortunate that the secretary of defense maintains an unenlightened point of view regarding what is, in fact, in the best interests of the American people and all of humankind.

What we do not need, and actually can't survive with in the long run, is a persistence that we must deter our enemies by stockpiling and testing nuclear weapons (which are the most environmentally offensive creations on Earth).

What we do need is to mature to the point where we can reach out without suspicion to other human beings sharing our planet and beckoning to us to cohabit it in peace.
