Six passengers aboard a 31-foot cabin cruiser were rescued two miles off Huntington Beach after the boat split in two, a U.S. Coast Guard spokesman said. The boat later was destroyed in pounding surf near the Huntington Beach pier. The six people, who were not identified, were picked up by a Coast Guard rescue boat after calling for assistance. The cabin cruiser "was split from bow to stern," a Coast Guard spokesman said. About two hours after the mid-afternoon rescue, the boat drifted close to shore and was quickly smashed to pieces by the strong surf.
