The Philippine Supreme Court rejected a petition to nullify the May 11 congressional elections, ruling that the opposition had failed to show sufficient evidence of widespread fraud. An opposition alliance led by former Defense Minister Juan Ponce Enrile had charged fraud and cheating in the elections, which President Corazon Aquino's ticket won by an apparent landslide. Official returns from more than 78% of the precincts show Aquino forces winning 22 of 24 Senate seats and more than 140 seats in the 200-seat House of Representatives. The opposition Senate candidates who appeared to have been elected were Enrile and Joseph Estrada, a popular actor.
