St. Bernard and Chadwick will play for their first CIF baseball championships after winning close semifinals Tuesday. St. Bernard, a 1-0 winner over Baldwin Park, will face Whittier Christian at 10 a.m. Saturday in Dodger Stadium for the 1-A title. Chadwick, a Small Schools Division finalist thanks to Tuesday's 2-1 victory over Lone Pine, will play Templeton at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Blair Field in Long Beach.
St. Bernard (21-4) advanced thanks to senior Tim Williams, who threw a two-hitter, struck out 15 and accounted for the game's only run with a sixth-inning home run. The Loyola Marymount-bound left-hander improved his pitching record to 9-1 and his 15th homer of the season gave him 25 for his high school career, a CIF Southern Section record. Whittier Christian, which whipped Gladstone, 17-5, Tuesday, is 20-5.
Chadwick's Jeff Kaufman also hurled a two-hitter, pitching eight innings and striking out 14 as the Dolphins (15-7) stranded 12 runners but finally scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth on Jeff Karnes' RBI single. Karnes scored Chadwick's first run in the third inning but Lone Pine tied the game in the fifth. Kaufman improved his record to 9-2. Templeton, a 7-2 winner Tuesday over Avalon, is 21-4.
