AIDS Infection Rate May Hit 5%

June 04, 1987|Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Similarities between the spread of hepatitis and AIDS suggest that the AIDS virus may eventually infect 5% of all Americans, including 30% of the urban poor, at the rate of 100,000 new cases a year, a researcher said today.

Dr. Donald Francis of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control told the Third International Conference on AIDS that his "do-nothing model" is based on the assumption that people won't stop risky behavior that helps the virus to spread.
