The Burbank City Council on Tuesday approved spending $554,375 to help purchase hillside property in the Verdugo Mountains that the city wants to preserve as a greenbelt.
The money will be matched with state funds designated for parklands and channeled through the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. The city will buy the property, appraised at $1.1 million, from developer Sherman Whitmore.
Whitmore had presented several development proposals to the council, but city officials always rejected them for fear of damaging the environment.
The property is on the south slope of the Verdugo Mountains
