JERUSALEM — Israeli officials said Wednesday, on the eve of a trip to Africa by Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir, that they expect more African countries to follow Togo's example and renew official ties with the Jewish state.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Ehud Gol said Israel is gratified by Togo's announcement Tuesday that it will become the fifth black African state to restore ties severed in the 1973 Arab-Israeli War.

"We are in contact with some other African nations but for obvious reasons, we will not spell out their names now," he told reporters.
