The World : Manila Gets U.S. Copters

June 12, 1987

The United States delivered 10 refurbished UH-1H Huey helicopters to the Philippines amid rebel charges that Washington is pressing President Corazon Aquino to mount a "total war" against Communist rebels. U.S. Charge d'Affaires Philip Kaplan, speaking at ceremonies at Manila's Villamor air base, said the copters used during the Vietnam War will increase troop mobility and reduce the risk of ambushes against the 250,000-member Filipino military. The Communist-led National Democratic Front earlier accused Washington of being the "principal author of total war" against the 24,000-member guerrilla army.
