I must take exception to John E. Hubbard's assertion (Letters, June 4) that there is no biblical precedent for the separation of church and state. Quite the contrary. Jesus himself made the distinction quite clear when the Pharisees attempted to trap him over the issue of whether or not it was right to pay taxes to Caesar. His familiar response came back, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's." (Matthew 22:15-22) The apostle Paul says much the same thing when he writes about the Christian's relationship with government in Romans 13.
