June 18, 1987|Ralph Nichols

Olympic medalists John Naber and Cynthia Woodhead will officiate Monday at the opening ceremonies of the Amateur Athletic Foundation Summer Swim '87, a competitive swimming instructional program for youths aged 6 to 17.

Naber, a gold medalist at the 1976 Olympics, and Woodhead, a 1984 Olympic silver medalist, will speak at the ceremonies that begin at 10 a.m. at Belvedere Park in East Los Angeles.

Basic swimming skills are required for the program which will emphasize such competitive maneuvers as a racing start and finish, kick turns and relay-race techniques. There will also be several coaching clinics.

This year's program was expanded to encompass all of Los Angeles County after a successful pilot program last summer. Lessons will be available at 97 YMCA facilities and pools throughout the county, including 23 Valley-based sites.

Instruction will be free at county pools, while city and YMCA pools will charge a fee. Scholarships will be available for the eight-week program, which will conclude with a meet.

The beginning of the AAF program coincides with the opening of all L.A. City Department of Recreation and Parks' pools. Lessons can be arranged after Monday, including lessons for the handicapped which will be available at 10 of the 16 Valley pools.
