June 20, 1987|Associated Press

AUCKLAND, New Zealand — Led by fly half Grant Fox, New Zealand rallied from a 9-0 halftime deficit today to crush France, 29-9, and win the inaugural 16-nation World Cup Rugby Union tournament.

Fox kicked four penalties, a drop goal and a conversion for 17 points. Flanker Michael Jones, captain David Kirk and winger John Kirwan all scored tries for New Zealand in the second half.

France's points came on a late try to scrum half Pierre Berbizier and a penalty and conversion by wing Didier Camberabero.

New Zealand was cheered on by a sellout crowd of 46,000.
