Saying that "The time has come that I can't play anymore," Tom Seaver abandoned his comeback with the New York Mets and announced his retirement.

Seaver, 42, the winningest pitcher in Met history, rejoined the team when its pitching staff was depleted by injuries in late May but did not pitch in a regular-season game.
