June 26, 1987| Arts and entertainment reports from The Times, national and international news services and the nation's press

Most animal trainers believe that physical abuse is the only way to train chimps to act, according to a recently completed Humane Society of America investigation into allegations of chimpanzee abuse on the set of "Project X." The report, released Thursday, fell short of confirming the allegations made by Bob Barker and an animal-rights group--and denied by producers on the Matthew Broderick movie. In addition, it was announced that the Humane Society will propose the adoption of a policy forbidding the use of all wild animals in motion pictures--including wild animal "actors"--until "steps are taken to ensure that such animals are not subjected to abuse and suffering."
