Lt. Col. Oliver North: Patriotic Hero or Misguided Zealot?

July 16, 1987

The question "Is Oliver North a patriot or a zealot?" is inappropriate. He is neither. North is a world-class terrorist, a key operator in a network of politically motivated murderers known as the Nicaraguan contras.

North and the Reagan Administration would have us believe the contras are "Freedom Fighters," but as I learned in a recent trip to Nicaragua, the contras only purpose is to destroy symbols of economic progress by that country's democratically-elected and so-called "communist" government. The contras deliberately murder civilians who work with the Nicaraguan government or sometimes any that get in their way.

The American people may have sympathy for our teary-eyed Marine who tried so hard for his President, but the truth remains unchanged. North, like the President he served, is a terrorist.
