Norwalk : College Seat to Stay Vacant

July 16, 1987

Rather than appoint someone to fill the unexpired term of Dale Hardeman, president of the Cerritos College Board of Trustees, the trustees have voted to leave the seat vacant until the regular scheduled Nov. 3 election. In a unanimous vote July 7, trustees for the Norwalk-based college gave their approval to leave the seat on the seven-member board vacant.

Hardeman resigned July 1 for health reasons. Hardeman, 42, whose four-year term would have ended Nov. 3 announced he was leaving the post because his doctor advised him to curtail some of his activities because of high blood pressure.

Meanwhile, two of the three incumbents up for reelection have officially declared they are candidates for reelection.

Barbara J. Hayden, who has been on the board for two years, has filed to run for reelection with Los Angeles County registrar-recorder's office. Hayden replaced Richard Goul, who resigned as a trustee in 1985. Hayden, who was board vice president, will serve as president following Hardeman's resignation. She is from Downey.

Katie Norbak, who has been on the board for 18 years, also has filed to run for reelection. She is from La Mirada.

Harold T. Tredway, the third incumbent, had not filed as of July 14. The nomination period opened July 13 and closes Aug. 7.

Two other candidates, Ruth Banda, who lists her occupation as university administrator, and Ben A. Pendleton, who lists his occupation as outreach worker, have filed. Banda is from La Mirada. Pendleton is from Bellflower.

The Cerritos College district boundary includes 12 southeast cities. There are 163,377 registered voters within the district boundaries. Trustees are elected at large.
