The "Technologicalization" of Music

July 26, 1987

I have read Matthew Smith's "The Sound of Science" (June 28) and must confess that my interest in the subject was greatly overshadowed by my dismay at the one-sidedness of the presentation. While the article voiced concern regarding the effect of electronic instruments on the employment of traditional musicians, it completely ignored the effect the rapidly increasing "technologicalization" of music has on the art itself. I am particularly concerned with the problems of the composer trying to communicate his vision to his fellow human beings, his audience, and with the loss of flexibility acoustical instruments afford the performer in accomplishing this task.
