PR People See Need for 'Educating' Clients

July 26, 1987

In every other industry in which I have been involved, management has at least a cursory understanding of the power and limitations of public relations. Builders and developers don't. Personally, whether or not clients are on an ego trip is not my concern as long as they truly have a good story to tell. The problem is getting them to listen to good public relations counsel.

No reasonable business persons would try to tell their lawyer or accountant to bribe, through lunch or any other means, a judge or the IRS. Yet, they expect just such behavior in my relationship with the media. What is even worse, in trying to tell me how to do my job, many simply lie, and that hurts my reputation and credibility.
