Senate OKs Railroad Safety Bill

July 28, 1987|Associated Press

WASHINGTON — A Senate committee, reacting to concern over last January's fatal Amtrak crash in Maryland, approved a bill today giving the government more power to remove workers with bad safety records from train crews.

The measure would allow the Federal Railroad Administration to fire railroad employees--including management--who have violated safety laws. Railroads and the government would also be allowed to retrieve information from the National Driver Register to see if prospective rail employees have bad motor vehicle records.
