Arena Football League Championship : Taylor Leads Dynamite, 45-16

August 02, 1987|Associated Press

PITTSBURGH — Whit Taylor passed for four touchdowns, three to Gary Mullen, as the Denver Dynamite defeated the Pittsburgh Gladiators, 45-16, Saturday night to win the first Arena Football League championship game.

Denver never trailed in one of the lowest-scoring games in the league's first season, and the Gladiators were shut out until 3:43 into the fourth quarter.

Mullen, 24, of West Virginia was named the game's most valuable player after his second and third touchdown receptions put the game out of reach early in the final quarter.

The Gladiators started former Minnesota quarterback Mike Hohensee but switched to Brendan Folmar with 1:34 remaining in the second quarter when their offense continued to struggle.

The game was held in Pittsburgh because the Gladiators attracted a few hundred more fans to their regular-season home games than the Dynamite. Both teams were 4-2 during the six-week season.
