This Ram Running Back Deserves All the Money That He Can Carry

August 15, 1987

I am sick and tired of reading letters by obviously non-athletic fans whose biggest sports accomplishment was picking up a pad and pen to write those letters. What most fans fail to realize is that the players are used, like race horses, and once they are used up, they are tossed to the side like an old rag.

You can't compare a professional sports figure with the job of some guy working at the mall. Athletes generate millions of dollars for the owners, media, networks, shoe companies, etc. They also made a considerable amount of money for their high school and college teams.

Eric Dickerson is one of the greatest running backs in the history of the National Football League and is No. 12 on the NFL pay scale. Yeah, it is easy for Mrs. Ram to say Eric is making enough money, but when was the last time someone went to a Ram game to see her?

In the '40s, everyone thought Joe Louis was making a large amount of money. But he died poor and with little fanfare. The real Sugar Ray lives in L.A., a forgotten man. So, I say to Eric, Magic Johnson and LeRoy Irvin, whatever you get, you deserve it.
