Fitness Academy in Laguna Hills

August 16, 1987

I would like to thank the people of Orange County for their continued support of the U.S. Fitness Academy, the fitness education and training center to be built in Laguna Hills. Specifically, I would like to express my appreciation to those individuals who joined us at Niguel Regional Park July 19 for a community picnic to kick off the Run Around America.

The National Fitness Foundation's Run Around America will bring the message of fitness to the hometowns of 100 million Americans over the next 10 months. Our runner, Sarah Fulcher, began the trip on July 21 and will cover nearly 11,000 miles around the perimeter of the United States--averaging about 32 miles a day--before returning to Laguna Hills to the site of the academy.

Why would anyone run farther than a marathon every day for 10 months? Fulcher, as I am, is motivated to improve the state of fitness in our nation. Throughout her run she will proclaim the importance of being fit and gather national support for the academy.

People will make the difference in the future of fitness in America. These people have demonstrated their commitment with their involvement and participation in the picnic and kickoff of the Run Around America. They will have a great sense of pride when the academy is built in Orange County, and I know the academy will serve them well.
